The Humane Society of Sarasota County has occupied the same location on 15th Street since its founding in 1952. Back then, HSSC had space for only 48 dogs and 6 cats. Now, HSSC occupies a sprawling 3.5-acre, 38,000ft2 campus with space for hundreds of animals at once and more than 2,600 each year. The beautiful (and newly renovated) facility is home to a continuous display of heartwarming moments: cats lounging on the multi-story “catios,” kittens pouncing and playing, dogs walking through the leafy gardens with volunteers in tow, and—best of all—happy adopters posing with their new cat or dog. From the moment they arrive at HSSC, animals are surrounded by comfort and care. As a no-kill shelter, HSSC never sets time limits. Animals have a home with us for as long as they need one.
Many shelters provide the essentials: food, water, a clean kennel. But HSSC is more than “just a shelter.” HSSC goes Beyond Shelter, engaging the hearts, hands, and minds of the community to help animals. Fundamentally, we believe that every animal deserves a second chance for a happy life. Animals entering our facility receive the very best in nutrition, veterinary care, enrichment, behavior support, and training before being adopted into permanent homes. We are also committed to advancing programs and services that keep animals in loving homes, remove barriers to placement, and promote empathy through humane education.
As a private nonprofit organization, HSSC relies on the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations. We receive no federal funding, nor are we affiliated with any other humane organization, local or national. Of every dollar donated, 91 cents go to our programs for adoptions, volunteers, pet therapy, humane education, obedience courses, pet food pantry, and our public Animal Clinic. Our commitment to fiscal responsibility has earned us the coveted 4-star rating and a perfect score from Charity Navigator for several years in a row. With our 70th anniversary approaching in February 2022, HSSC has never been in a better position to impact the animal welfare landscape in our community, our state, and our region. With every adoption, every happy tail, and every success story, HSSC is going Beyond Shelter.
