“The greatest threat to our planet is belief that someone will save it.”

– Robert Swan

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is a nonprofit marine science institution and public aquarium home to world-class scientists and educators committed to the belief that conservation and sustainable use of our oceans begins with research and education.

From our humble beginnings in a small, one-room laboratory in a small Florida town, our efforts have grown to include more than 20 diverse marine research programs and outreach efforts that reach people across the globe. With its main campus and public Aquarium on City Island in Sarasota, Mote also operates an Aquaculture Research Park in east Sarasota, two public outreach facilities in the Florida Keys, the Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration on Summerland Key, and a new coral nursery in Islamorada.

Founded by famed ichthyologist Dr. Eugenie Clark and originally focused on sharks, our research has expanded to include studies of sustainable aquaculture systems designed to alleviate growing pressures on wild fish populations; red tide research that works to inform the public and mitigate the adverse effects of Florida red tide with innovative technologies; marine animal science, conservation and rehabilitation programs dedicated to the protection of animals such as sea turtles, manatees and dolphins; coral reef restoration and research efforts dedicated to saving one of the world’s most unique marine ecosystems; and much more.

Mote’s education and outreach efforts are the other leg on which we stand, as we strive everyday to share our research with the world through educational programs, community outreach, and our public Mote Aquarium. Mote Aquarium is open 365 days per year and accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Mote’s award-winning education programs include programs such as SeaTrek, a virtual learning program that has connected children and adults alike to our research and the ocean, regardless of their location.

The challenges facing our oceans remain grand, and at Mote, we’re growing to ensure we can continue to apply our science and inspire the next generation of conservationists, researchers, and ocean advocates. That’s why we’re moving forward with the planned rebirth of Mote Aquarium as the new Mote Science Education Aquarium (Mote SEA) at Nathan Benderson Park. Nestled in a nexus location for Sarasota and Manatee counties and as a gateway to the rest of southwest Florida, Mote SEA will more than double Mote Aquarium’s current visitors. Creating Mote SEA in its new home will free up space on our primary campus on City Island in Sarasota and allow it to transform into an enhanced International Marine Science, Technology & Innovation Park. Learn about the new Mote Science Education Aquarium (Mote SEA) at moteoceansforall.org
