“Follow your heart but take your brain with you.” Alfred Adler
The Roskamp Institute and Clinic began in 2003 with a mission to lessen the burden of those suffering with neurological conditions. Founded by President and CEO Dr. Fiona Crawford and Executive Director Dr. Michael Mullan, The Roskamp Institute has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers encompassing Alzheimer’s Disease, Traumatic Brain Injury, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Gulf War Illness, Drug Addiction, and Inflammation, and has competed for and been awarded more than $50M in peer-reviewed grant funding and $15M in contract research.

While the work of Roskamp Institute is known worldwide, many are surprised to learn that its treatment facility, Roskamp Clinic, cares for more than a thousand patients each year in this community. The Clinic brings hope to patients with neurological conditions and their families every day, through services that include evaluation and treatment, family and caregiver support, and the opportunity to join clinical trials. By participating in these research studies, patients and volunteers generate invaluable real-world data for the Roskamp scientific team.
Private donations from the community play a very important role in Roskamp’s research and treatment mission by fueling the groundwork required to apply for the major research funding that comes by way of grants or contracts from National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, VA, and others. In a recent example of community funding at work, Roskamp Institute was awarded a $400,000 grant to study the neurological effects of Florida Red Tide on Gulf coast residents based on a pilot study funded by $40,000 in community donations – a one to ten ratio between donor money and money generated from federal funds.
Currently, Roskamp Clinic has studies underway in Red Tide, Multiple Sclerosis, PTSD, Gulf War Illness, and Traumatic Brain Injury. Volunteers are needed and those interested can contact Megan Parks at 941-256-8018, ext. 3096, or by emailing mparks@roskampinstitute.org.
