“We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty, though it never was. Most of all, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause.” - Ronald Reagan

HAPPY VETERANS DAY! Today we are honored to share our most recent client donation story, which highlights a Veteran-centric non-profit created by local celebrity and media personality, Maverick Johnson. The Denis V. Cooper Foundation - Wishes for Heroes, was created to honor our brave military veterans who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness, as well as those who have reintegrated back into civilian life after their military service, by granting wishes.

Maverick’s Father, Sgt. Denis V. Cooper bravely battled cancer that was a result of his exposure to Agent Orange while he served in Vietnam. Cooper’s cancer went misdiagnosed and the disease ravaged his body. While in hospice, Sgt. Cooper and his family were informed of a Wish Granting program offered by the VA on a limited basis. Unfortunately, by the time he was able to request his last wish: Take a fishing trip with his family, the severity of his medical condition eliminated the possibility of doing so. And so the Denis V. Cooper foundation was born.

"The Denis V. Cooper Foundation - Wishes for Heroes" was created with a simple goal. To develop a program that reaches out within Sarasota & Manatee Counties on a grass-roots level to honor our military veterans and their families. Currently the 13th Congressional District in Florida which encompasses most of Sarasota & Manatee Counties, is one of the largest Congressional Districts with military veterans in the entire country. The goal to serve our returning veterans as well as those terminally ill veterans and their families, by honoring their service.

Recent examples of the hero's and their wishes are:

Chief Bill Cheeseman - US Navy, a World War II Veteran from Sarasota. He is 98 years young This Hero can’t stop smiling, because after years of the VA turning him down for dental care, he now has his pearly whites back. Thanks to our amazing  supporters, we were able to take care of his needed dental work. The Chief says he can't wait to have a steak dinner for the first time in years.

Sgt. Clarence Addy, United States Air Force, a B-17 lower ball turret gunner in WWII, he flew many combat missions against Nazi Germany. Clarence is 94 years old and lives in Sarasota. His friend Dale Alyward nominated him to receive a “wish”. Clarence’s roof was in bad shape and needed to be replaced. Thanks to every one of our supporters, we were able to grant this Hero’s Wish. What a treasure he is. His personality lights up a room.

In One case the Foundation had a “wish request” that had to change during our granting process for a local hero who passed away unexpectedly. Here is a video that tells their story and how the Foundation was able to support his family.

Through a recent real estate transaction, CATALIST REALTY was able to provide additional funds in the amount of $2,048 that will go towards the next round of wish nominations to be approved by the foundation.
